Topic: So what? There IS a story in your data visualizations: how to bring it to life

Session Description: In this short presentation, we will cover the fundamentals of data visualization and storytelling using a real-world example. In school, we learn about language and about math. In language, we are taught how to write sentences and tell stories. In math, we're taught how to make sense of numbers. But it's rare that these 2 subjects are paired: no one teaches us how to make stories out of numbers or how to bring our story out of our graphs. This means we rely too heavily on our tools to communicate the story for us. And unfortunately, our tools allow us to do some very ineffective things pretty easily (i.e. 3D, too much color, noise). It takes us, the professionals, to add value by pulling the story out of our visualizations and making it visually clear.

Speaker Bio: Elizabeth Ricks has a passion for good data visualization, information design and storytelling. She’s spent her career in various analytical roles in the pharmaceutical, retail, manufacturing and financial services industries where all of her roles have had one common theme: analyzing information and communicating it to stakeholders. Elizabeth has a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and a Master’s Degree in Business Analytics and in her career has touched the entire analytical process from gathering, cleaning, organizing, modeling and analyzing data and now spends her time teaching others on the often-ignored (and arguably most important piece!): communicating data to drive action.  She works as a consultant for Storytelling with Data and is based in Charlotte, NC.

Meeting Location: Microsoft Office, 8055 Microsoft Way, Charlotte, NC 28273. We're in the Multipurpose Room (MPR) in the left building - the 2nd door, farthest from the entrance.
